Studied with Wataru
Harada, Norihiko Watanabe, Koichi Kezuka, Seiko Obara, and
Akira Seta for flamenco guitar. Also studied the flamenco
dance under Ariza Ishida, and ukulele playing under Shoji
Tsuda. She attended masterclasses of Thomas Muller-Pering,
Manuel Babiloni.
Sugawara received the first prize at the 11th All Japan
Guitar Competition in the guitar duet division, and was
awarded the second prize at 6th Japan Guitar Ensemble
Competition. Her composition Song and Dance of Ichinoseki
was recorded on the CD and broadcasted on NHK Radio by late
Kunio Shichinohe. Her illustration was used in Noboru
Muraji's guitar method. She has performed at salon concerts,
joint concerts, school concerts, etc.
Recently she has been collaborating with Yoko Fujimori as
the Maria Duo. Many renowned composers have dedicated works
for her and those include; Francis Kleynjans, Jozsef Eotvos,
Keigo Fujii, and Hirokazu Sato. Also transcriptions by famed
arrangers Hirokazu Sato, Ken-ichi Ebe, Mineo Yoshida have
been dedicated to her.
In 2002, she released her first CD album La Gatica.
She was one of the juries for the first round at the 47th
Tokyo International Guitar Competition, and a member of
Japan Federation of Guitarists and Japan Guitarists Society.
She is currently teaching the guitar and ukulele at her
studio HOMA dream Music School.
